Unlike other ancient cultures, food was usually plentiful in ancient Egypt.  The Egyptians relied on the yearly flooding of the Nile to create fertile lands that yielded crops that fed the masses.  Scenes of animal husbandry and butchery, were a fixture on the walls of Egyptian tombs.  No less rare, are scenes of fishing and fishermen along with images and hieroglyphs about the preparation of fish for eating, and images of birds and foul being plucked and preserved.  Egyptian art more often portrayed the act of food preparation than the food itself.  However, banquets and feasts were common amongst the nobles.  Goose and beef were popular dishes, but were very likely limited to those with...

The word jubilee is derived from the Hebrew yobel, meaning ram’s horn. In the ancient time, the jubilee was announced by the blowing of the shofar, a trumpet of ram’s horn, and as a result, the occasion came to be known as yobel, or jubilee. The Arabic word for jubilee is also yobel, and Turkish ellinci. Jubilee is a momentous occasion, denoting the celebration of a period of time, anniversary or other special occasions. Platinum is a soft, ductile and silver-white metallic element. The Spanish scientist Antonio de Ulloa discovered it in gold-bearing deposits in Columbia in 1735. The English chemist William Wollaston first obtained pure platinum in 1803; and was also the first to devise a way to...

Along the plateau of Giza, facing the rising sun, the Great Sphinx statue still sits. Visiting the site it is impossible to remain unmoved; the Sphinx is gigantic; 241 ft in length, 20 feet wide, and 66.34. It is one of the earliest AND most significant statues on the globe, but apart from these measurements, many of us fully understand almost nothing about it. No-one has learned for certain whose face the sculpture bears, exactly who had it constructed or even the key reason why. We can say for sure that the Great Sphinx may be so ancient the Pharaohs (including Rameses II) regarded it as an incredibly ancient and sent trades-people to restore it, as in their period the vast majority of the...

The content of Maya classic civilization is very rich and can be summarized only in a briefest way. They consist of large pyramidal mounds and platforms made of earth and rock fill. Many of the Maya buildings are tremendously high and amazingly steep. As examples, the great temple pyramid of Tikal rise tower-like to heights of over 60 meters above the plaza floors. The buildings which surmount the pyramids and platforms also were constructed of rubble fill and stone-block masonry. In some, as in the northern lowlands, the dressed-stone facing were no more than a veneer set in stucco. Walls of the buildings were thick and rooms were relatively narrow; roofs were vaulted with corbelled arches. Doors...

Jesus died on the cross of a result of unjust prosecution. He was prosecuted by Pontius Pilate even without any sufficient proof. He was condemned without being tried fairly. Sadly, even Pilate himself declared that no fault was seen in Christ three times. Had this happened in the modern world, the accused should have been released.  Thus, the crucifixion story itself provides lessons about an essential aspect of human existence—the human rights. The mob insisted that this innocent Man be killed. Pontius Pilate bore false witness against Christ insisting that He was a big threat to the then existing Roman Empire. He accused Him of rebellion, creating a false picture of Christ persuading people...

The history of Yoga has a lot to do with the present times. Yoga started some 5000years ago when human civilization has only begun. Scholars have believed that Yogawas originated out of Stone Age 'Shamanism'. This is because there were some cultural similarities between Mehrgarh which was a Neolithic settlement and the Modern Hinduism. The shamanistic culture of Mergarhwas in fact influenced by Hindu ideals, symbols and rituals of the present. Theancient shamanism and early Yoga had so much similarity for the reason bothwanted to go beyond the human condition. Shamanism's primary goal was to heal the members who were in their society and atthe same time act as the religious mediators. Archaic Yoga...

His father was a draper, and the family fled the city when it was conquered by Spain in 1585, moving to Haarlem in Holland where Frans Hals would spend the rest of his life. Hals studied painting from 1601-1603 under Karel van Mander, who had fled Antwerp at the same time as the Hals family, and in 1610, was admitted to the Haarlem painters' guild. He started working for the city as an art restorer and in the same year, married his first wife, Annetje Harmansdr. The couple had two sons, but Annetje died during the birth of their second son. Before the Barbizon School and the Impressionists promoted the idea of painting on location or 'En plein air' most artists would work in the studio.  While initial sketches and even some painting was done outside, the majority of the work was completed in-doors. Using acrylics in a hot climate necessitates a return to this method of working, and thanks to the technology that is now at our disposal contemporary artists can avoid prolonged spells in an inhospitable climate and work in the relative comfort of the studio. While some purists may argue that an artist should only work from their own sketches and drawings, those who are willing to embrace the digital camera will find that the opportunities...
